Walter David Belshaw was one of those folks who never could quite get it in gear. He never seemed to get a lot of support back in school, and made a number of poor decisions. Nevertheless, he always seemed hopeful.
Early on at Camp Springs Elementary he was known as David Belshaw; later on in high school he preferred Wally - I think as something of an attempt to shed his former persona. After school he did a post-draft stint in the Army as a radioman in Germany. He always had a tough time of it.
I'll never forget when he came back from boot camp before going over to Germany. My gosh - he had muscles! We'd never seen Wally with muscles. He also learned to cuss (finally) and used a bad word in just about every half-sentence. Quite a change.
I knew Wally from first grade on. I miss him.
